Chapter 9: Day 7 Ben

Jezra leads the way and I do my best not to look at her butt as she walks. I need to focus on the mission, and save other things for later, but it’s hard when watching her move is so appealing.

“We’re almost there. There’s a fence, and a gate, with a guard post outside of the base.”

“Did you see any guards?”

“Yeah there’s a few. They look really scared, but who can blame them with the possibility of zombies.”

“I can, because they’re likely more in the know than I was and they supported Eslinger’s madness,” I reply.

“Yeah, but how much more in the know? Somehow I don’t think Eslinger was letting everyone in on his secret, or other people would have tried to stop him. Who knows, maybe some did and became zombies instead. My point, being even if they know about the zombies, they might not have known about them before the zombie apocalypse happened,” Jezra says.

“I guess you got a point. I certainly didn’t know. The only person who might have had an idea was the director of the call center, Monica. There was always something about her that was off.”

“We’re almost there, so let’s quiet down,” Jezra suggests.

I pantomime zipping my lips and she almost giggles and shoots me an exasperated glare. The other militia members quiet down as well. Jezra makes a motion to crouch down and all of us do. When I crouch I feel a crack in my knees as the joints release some tension I’ve been feeling. Jezra moves forward slowly and I join her, with a couple other people. Everyone else hangs back.

“See, there’s the fence, gate, and guard post,” Jezra hisses.

I see the fence. It looks like a regular fence, with barb wire at the top, but I’m betting Eslinger has spared no expense. It’s probably electrified. The gate sits on the road and its similar to the fence, but on rubber wheels so it can be moved out of the way if someone arrives. The guard post is just forward of the base and I can see two people in it. They aren’t looking alert or ready. They’re sitting at a table, and it looks like they’re playing something or talking. I don’t see anyone else around.

“What do we want to do Ben?” Jezra asks.

“Garret’s due to arrive soon. I think we should take these guards out and deal with any other defenses, but we need to do it stealthily, and hopefully avoid anyone else spotting us. I’ll go and I want two other people with me: Guillermo and Jacob. Jezra, I want you to stay here and keep an eye out for any other guards, and be ready to intercept. Once Jacob, Guillermo, and I take the two guards out, we’ll leave two people there to pretend to be guards and stage the rest of us nearby, ready to run interference on anything Eslinger might employ.”

“Why are you leaving me here?” Jezra asks.

“Because I need someone I trust who will do their best to keep everyone else alive.
